What are you favourite CMSes? And for what do you use them?

For simple things I like Textpattern. It has a very contemporary look and feel to it and is easy to use. Yet, it's a bit limited.

For more sophisticated stuff, like my homepage here, I use phpWebSite. The problem here is, that phpWebSite still is BETA and has a couple of rough edges. Then again, it's easy to use and I know the ins and outs of it. That means I can do almost everything I want with it.

If I'd knew about it earlier, I'd probably hacked around in Mambo instead of phpWebSite. It's more mature and already had a couple of revisions. On the other hand, I prefer not to have a dedicated backend but an all-inclusive solution like in phpWebSite.

If I'd only need a forum, I'd probably buy a license for vBulletin. While InVision Power Board might look a notch better and have a bit more community-features, vBulletin is rock solid and well laid out. vBulletin 3.5 even supports AJAX inline editing.

From the perspective of the non-programmer who needs to use something that doesn't have a high learning curve to it, I use e107 for my Family Genealogy site and Xoops for a gamming site. Both are easy to use and setup with many mods or plugins available to meet ones needs. I find most themes easy to customise and display well in all browsers.

I have used or tried others, but these are the two I like.

Speaking of easy to set up... Can you tell more about how to create fresh themes for either e107 or Xoops? Is it very demanding, can anyone do it? Is it like creating web sites with placeholders or more like TypoScript?
